The County of Hawai’i’s Department of Public Works announced Monday afternoon that Kamehameha Ave. in Hilo will close at 8 p.m. the same evening to move concrete barriers associated with road work.

The road will be closed from Ponohawai St. to the Canoe Landing entrance. An exception will be made at the intersection of Pauahi St. and Bayfront Hwy., where drivers will be allowed to drive through but will not be able to turn onto Kamehameha Ave.

Special off-duty police officers have been assigned to redirect traffic at the following locations:

  • The base of the Wailoa Bridge, where Hāmākua-bound drivers will be directed to go through a detour to get to Bayfront Hwy.
  • The inersection of Pauahi St. and Bayfront Hwy.
  • The intersection of Ponahawai St. and Kamehameha Ave, where Hāmākua-bound motorists will be directed to take Kīlauea Avenue.

Public Works says that the road is expected to reopen at 5 a.m. on Tuesday.
