Hilo Man Charged with Attempted Murder

A 21-year-old Hilo man was arrested and charged with attempted murder Saturday in connection with an altercation that occurred in Hilo.

According to a Hawai’i Police Department report, police responded to the 400 block of West Kawili St. on Saturday at 2 a.m. At the scene, they found a 21-year-old man with a neck injury. The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

A police investigation revealed that the victim attempted to break up a fight between two individuals, a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, when the suspect struck the victim in the neck with a machete.

The suspect, identified as Atkinson Nakashima of Hilo, was arrested at the scene and taken to the Hilo cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

On Sunday at 4 p.m., Nakashima was charged with attempted second-degree murder. His bail was set at $50,000.

Nakashim’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
