Autopsy Ordered After Apparent Drowning at Punalu’u Beach

A 53-year-old Mountain View man drowned off Punalu’u Black Sand Beach on Sunday.
Ka`u Patrol officers responded to a 12:08 p.m. call of a possible drowning. The man was pulled from the water and the Hawai`i County Fire Department took him to Ka`u hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m.
According to a Hawai`i County Police Department release, the man, identified as Reginald Awaa, was diving with family when he ran into trouble.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
