Hawaiʻi Island police remind motorists that Friday, Aug. 1, is the first day children return to most public schools.

All public schools will be open Monday, and motorists should expect an increase in traffic, especially in school zones, during morning and afternoon hours.

Sgt. Robert Pauole of the Traffic Services Section suggests adjusting daily schedules and starting earlier to avoid rushing while commuting to work.

Pauole also urged caution while driving in school zones, and to be attentive to children walking to school and crossing in marked crosswalks.
