Personnel from the Hilo Central station were able to keep a fire in a garage on Kaiulani Street Saturday night from spreading to the house.

Responding to a 9:28 p.m. alarm, the firefighters found a 2010 Jeep with the engine compartment on fire, with flames spreading to the walls and ceiling of the garage.

It took just five minutes to get the fire under control and another six minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Damage to the garage and contents was estimated at $24,500, but the home on Reed’s Island valued at nearly $400,000 was saved.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The main bridge to Reed’s Island is closed and under renovation which means the only current access to Kaiulani Street is a twisty detour via the narrow Hale and Kahema streets.
