A 65-year-old tourist had to be rescued Friday night after getting lost while bird-watching off Saddle Road.
The man left Saddle Road between the 22- and 23-mile marker at about 6:30 a.m., walking toward Mauna Loa.
A fire department spokesman said the man hiked for about four hours before realizing he was lost.
Authorities received a call, apparently from the missing man, at 7:53 p.m.
Using GPS coordinates from his cell phone, the man was eventually located deep in the forest by personnel from the Pohakuloa Training Area fire department and escorted back to the highway.
The spokesman said the man did not require medical attention.
