The county’s Solid Waste Division is providing the public a “treecycling” program for Christmas trees and other organic holiday decorations.

Through the end of January, residents are being encouraged to leave the trees in designated areas – not in rubbish chutes — at certain solid waste facilities around the island.

The trees should be free of all decorations including lights, tinsel and ornaments. Artificial or flocked trees are not included in the program.

Traditional New Year Kadomatsu decorations, which are normally a combination of bamboo, pine and flowers, should also be recycled.

The recycling locations are:

East Hawaii

  • East Hawaii Organics Facility at the Hilo landfill off Leilani Street
  • Transfer stations in Keaau, Pahoa and Honokaa

West Hawaii

  • West Hawaii Organics Facility at the Puuanahulu landfill
  • Transfer stations in Hawi (Kauuhuhu), Kailua-Kona (Kealakehe), Keahou, Keei, Puako, Waimea and Waiohinu
