Police Identify Opihi Picker, Cause of Death

An autopsy has indicated that a 27-year-old opihi picker found floating face down last week off the Hamakua coast died of drowning, police said today.

The man was identified as James McGivern Jr. of Paauilo.

Police said McGivern was picking opihi in the area of Kawela’s Beach near Honoka`a on the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 13, when he was swept into the ocean.
