A 49-year-old Puna man was being held at the Hilo police cellblock today on suspicion of attempted murder following a confrontation Tuesday night in Puna in which a man was shot by a spear gun.

The suspect was identified as George Curnett of Pahoa.

Detectives were continuing an investigation of the incident and no charges had been filed as of early this afternoon.

Police said the incident occurred at about 10:15 p.m. on Leilani Avenue in the Leilani Estates subdivision.

The victim, a 20-year-old Pahoa man, was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he underwent surgery. Police said he remained in critical condition.

A 61-year-old woman sustained a leg injury after being struck by a large rock during the incident. She was treated at the hospital and released.
