36 Big Island Drivers Charged with DUIs

According to statistics released by the Hawaii Police Department, officers arrested 36 motorists for drunk driving last week.

From March 11 through March 17, HPD officers arrested 8 individuals for DUI offenses after they were involved in motor vehicle accidents, four of whom were under the age of 21.

The remaining 28 drivers were arrested through roadblocks and patrol activities.

There have been 277 DUI arrests compared with 302 during this same time last year, a decrease of 17.5%.

But according to HPD, traffic fatalities are up 42.9% year-over-year, with ten road deaths so far in 2013, compared to 7 at this same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols are slated to continue across the island.
