Hawaii Electric Light Co. said that its customers along a portion of the Hamakua coast will have their power cut early Friday morning to allow crews to do emergency substation repairs.

The electrical outage expected to last from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. involves customers from Kukaiau to Kalopa, the company said in a statement issued this morning. Other towns in that area include Paauilo, Paauhau and Haina.

HELCO recommended that affected customers unplug sensitive equipment prior to the outage.

Those with critical medical needs for electricity should make other arrangements, the utility said.
