Big Island police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man whose body was found at a campsite at a remote Ka`u beach.

The remains are believed to be of a male about 5-foot-9 with long brown hair. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

Brown hiking shoes and socks were found at the campsite, along with a blue backpack and white plastic grocery bags filled with empty food cans and soft drink containers.

Police said the body was found Saturday by a boater who landed at Waikini Beach north of South Point.

Police said the cause of death has not been determined, but investigation of the scene and an autopsy conducted Monday suggests foul play was not involved.

Because of the remote location, police were flown to the campsite in a Fire Department helicopter.

Police believe the man may have died up to two weeks before his remains were discovered.

Anyone who has information about the man, or who knows of anyone missing who fits the man’s description, is asked to call police Lt. Gerald Wike at 326-4646, ext. 266.
