UPDATE: House Destroyed By Fire That Closed Road

A fire that prompted the closing of Highway 180 around 6:30 a.m. today between Holualoa Elementary School and Hualalai Garage destroyed a two-story home.

The cause of the fire that destroyed the home northeast of Hualalai Road and Highway 180 is under investigation. The home’s three occupants were assisted by the Red Cross.

The value of the property that was burned was not immediately available.

School officials this morning told Big Island Now that the school was open this morning, and parents were able to turn in to the normal student drop-off area near the school cafeteria, but as they leave the campus, they were re-routed back onto Palani Road.

The school official said that the fire was south of the school near the Hualalai Garage.

The road was reopened at about 10 a.m.
