A two-vehicle accident this morning on Saddle Road caused a vehicle fire which spread to grass along the roadside. The collision and firefighters’ efforts resulted in a 70-minute closure of the highway.
The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. near the 50-mile marker, a Hawaii Fire Department spokesman said.
Paramedics arriving at the scene found both cars off the roadway, with one fully engulfed in flames. Both vehicles’ occupants escaped without injury.
The fire burned approximately one acre. Firefighters from the nearby Pohakuloa Training Area were assisted by light winds which pushed the flames toward the road.
