Arrests made on drivers who operate their vehicles under the influence are still slightly down as compared to last year, according to the latest Hawaii Police Department statistics.

Those arrests have decreased 0.6% as compared to the same point in 2011, with the numbers collected this year ending on February 12th. 161 DUI arrests have been made this year, one less than last year. Thirty of those arrests took place last week, with five of those booked under the legal drinking age of 21.

Also down is the number of traffic accidents and fatalities on the island. The 154 major accidents that have happened this year is an 8.9% decline from last year’s 169. The two traffic deaths that took place in the last week are still shy of the five that happened at this time last year. That is a 60% decline.

Police officials are reminding motorists that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue throughout the island.
