New information about the power companyʻs Repower Project, timelines and next milestones will be presented the public meeting at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility.

Hawaiʻi County Mayor Kimo Alameda said he is advocating for state funding to support construction of a North Kona hospital, a Puna alternate route to ease traffic and ways to address cost of living.

The meeting is slated for 4 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility, located at 15-0322 Kauhale St., in Pāhoa.

Time during Aug. 26 meeting will be dedicated for listening to comments, answering questions and having open, respectful dialogue with community members, as well as updates about the Repower Project that will provide up to 46 MW of energy.

Under the project, 12 aging generating units will be replaced with three modern generators to produce more power while decreasing its emissions footprint and electric costs to customers.

Officials will share detailed insights about the plant’s current status and future plans. A representative from Hawaiʻi County is also expected to participate. Questions and feedback will be welcome.

The quarterly meeting will also feature information about the latest developments at the plant, which has been producing electricity from geothermal resources since 1993 on the Big Island.

The study aims to build on previous assessments by sampling more sites and conducting more analysis throughout its duration.

The request for conservation is prompted by the unavailability or reduced output of several large generators.

Updates on the status of the Big Island geothermal energy facility are planned, as well as a representative from Hawaiʻi County expected to participate and take questions.

Residents vented numerous concerns Thursday night during a public meeting to discuss the new draft Environmental Impact Statement for Puna Geothermal Venture’s proposed “Repower Project.”

The session will begin with an informational open house from 4:30 to 5:20 p.m., opening remarks at 5:20 p.m., and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., oral comments will be accepted (to be recorded via audio and video).

Puna Geothermal Venture will host its first community meeting in 2023 on Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility.

Those planning to attend the next quarterly community meeting to discuss plant operations at Puna Geothermal Venture will need to update their schedules.
