Umauma Bridge, located along Highway 19 in the Hakalau area, has been reopened.

A State of Hawai’i Department of Transportation spokesperson tells Big Island Now the roadway was reopened at 6 a.m. Thursday.

The closure occurred last Thursday after what officials said earlier this week was due to “a significant amount of water” that flowed under the bridge.

Foundation work was conducted on Wednesday following a bridge assessment, which was completed Tuesday afternoon.

An area within one mile of the bridge was also closed as it was deemed unfit for motor vehicles. Motorists were detoured through Old Mamalahoa Highway.

Umauma Bridge continues to undergo continous bridge rehabilitation work, and the area remains under a one-lane traffic pattern with traffic signals.
