California Man Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash

A man died in Hilo Saturday night after driving his vehicle off the road and striking a cement wall.

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that a 61-year-old California man was driving south on Kanoelehua Avenue in a 2015 Ford four-door sedan when he ran off the right side of the road between Kahaopea Street and Kawailani Street in Hilo.

Officers responded at 9:41 p.m. and belive he may have suffered a medical condition prior to the crash.

The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:16 p.m.

HPD says the man’s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

A coroner’s inquest case has been initiated by Traffic Enforcement Unit officers. An autopsy has also been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information regarding the incident is asked to call Officer Keith Nacis at 961-8118.
