Waiakeawaena Playground Closed for Renovation
The Waiakeawaena Park playground in Hilo closed for renovation today, the latest in a series of playground improvements across the island.
The park’s ball fields and recently renovated Andrews gymnasium will remain open during the reconstruction, although the work will have a minor effect on the main ball field’s right field area.
The work is scheduled for completion in June.
The $220,000 project being done by contractor Pacific Recreation Co. will result in a two separate play areas, one for keiki 2 to 5 years old and another for those up to 12.
The project is a joint effort by the county Department of Parks and Recreation and state Department of Education.
The playground renovation is the sixth being undertaken at keiki facilities across the island.
