Canadian Tourist Dies While Snorkeling at Kona Beach

A 70-year-old man visiting from Canada apparently drowned Wednesday afternoon while snorkeling at Kahalu`u Beach Park in Kona.

Police officers responding to a 3:40 p.m. call were told that the man, identified as Ian Michael Gordon of Alberta, had become motionless about 40 feet from shore.

A lifeguard brought the man ashore and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The victim was transported to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:13 p.m.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
