The county will be closing Reed’s Island Bridge from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Dec. 28, to prepare for extensive repairs slated for next year.

The repair project will close the Hilo bridge from Jan. 14 until October. Access to Reed’s Island during the closure will be via Kaiulani Street, which has been extended 400 feet to Hale and Kahema streets for use as a detour.

Other projects announced today by the county Department of Public Works includes a paving project that will prevent parking along a stretch of Hilo’s Kilauea Avenue on the mornings of Jan. 2 and 3.

The asphalt work will affect both sides of Kilauea in certain areas between Ponahawai and Pauahi Street from 8 a.m. to noon.

On Jan. 2, parking will be prohibited between Two Ladies Kitchen near Ponahawai Street to Kukuau Street. On Jan. 3, the work will move to the area between the Ben Franklin Store and Goodyear Tires.

Driveways in both stretches will not be blocked, a public works spokeswoman said.

Also, road resurfacing on Kaiminani Drive in Kona will be temporarily halted on Dec. 21 but will resume on Jan. 2. The work requires alternating closures of one lane of traffic.
