Big Island police said a 25-year-old Hilo man died Sunday of injuries sustained in a one-car crash that occurred on July 23.

Police responding to an 8:47 a.m. call found that the victim was driving a 20012 Mercury sedan south on South Point Road when he ran off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a utility pole and overturned several times.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

He was taken by helicopter to Kona Community Hospital where he died at 9:25 a.m.

Police said speed may have been a factor, but it is not known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The death was the 21st traffic fatality on public Big Island roads this year compared with 15 at this time in 2011.
