Big Island police said a 68-year-old man visiting from Montana apparently drowned while swimming today at Kahalu‘u Beach.

A lifeguard at the popular Kona beach told police that he had pulled the man to the shore after observing him floating in the water. First the lifeguard and then Fire Department paramedics performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on the man, identified as Edward Woyciehowicz of Missoula.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.
