‘A critical step forward’: Highway 137’s restoration underway in Lower Puna

Puna’s road to recovery doesn’t begin with just one road though. At the same time Hawaiʻi County announced restroration work was underway on Highway 137, officials also said a contract was awarded for the next road project in Lower Puna, which will be the reconstruction and realignment of 4.5 miles of Pohoiki Road also inundated by lava in 2018.

Restoration of lava-inundated road from Kīlauea gets green light

The Federal Emergency Management Agency granted Hawai‘i County a Notice to Proceed on repairs for Pohoiki Road, Highway 137 and a water line project.

Environmental Assessment Underway for Puna Roads Impacted by 2018 Eruption

The county’s Department of Public Works, Department of Water Supply, Planning Department’s Disaster Recovery Division and Council Member Ashley Kierkiewicz convened a virtual meeting with 50 community members to report on the status of restoring road and water infrastructure impacted by the 2018 Kīlauea volcanic eruption.

Striping Work Completed on Highway 132

The Department of Public Works requested and received a three-month extension from the Federal Highway Administration to complete the road restoration of Highway 132.

Road Conditions Improve as Wind Lightens

All major roadways around the island are open following a wind storm that knocked down trees and power lines. Pohoiki Road in Puna, however, remains closed.
