The Federal Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday approved the State of Hawai‘i’s request for a disaster declaration to provide assistance with the wind-whipped North Kohala wildfire on the Big Island.

Two more brush fires have broken out in South Kohala near the Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach areas on the Big Island, according to Hawaiʻi County officials.

Kohala Ranch, between Kamakani Loop to Akoni Pula Highway/270, remains under mandatory evacuation; and Akoni Pule Highway remains closed between the 6- and 17-mile markers.

According to the National Weather Service, radar indicated heavy rain over portions of North Kona, North and South Kohala and Hāmākua at 4:46 p.m. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
