Update: Brush fire near ʻAkoni Pule Highway in North Kohala extinguished

Update at 9:22 p.m. March 7: The Hawaiʻi Fire Department reports the brush fire near ʻAkoni Pule Highway (Highway 270) in North Kohala was extinguished and the highway is again open.

Original post: The Hawaiʻi Fire Department reports there is a brush fire in North Kohala between the 7- and 8-mile markers on ʻAkoni Pule Highway (Highway 270).

No structures are threatened and fire crews are on scene.

ʻAkoni Pule Highway, from the entrance to Kapa’a Beach Park near the 16-mile marker to the entrance of Kohala Ranch near the 7-mile marker, is closed. Motorists in the area are advised to use Kohala Mountain Road as an alternate route.

The public should expect traffic delays in the vicinity of the brush fire and road closure and avoid the area when possible.
