Charges against 39-year-old Joshua Allen Sheen of Kurtistown stem from an incident Monday morning, when a 29-year-old woman walked into the Hilo Police Station and reported being involved in an earlier domestic argument in which Sheen allegedly threw a bowl at her, striking her forehead and causing her pain.

37-year-old Christin Eve Ho‘omaikainani Ho of Hilo is charged with two counts of third-degree theft and 39-year-old Chase K. Leopoldino of Hilo is charged with one count of third-degree theft. Both are employees of the Hawai‘i County Department of Public Works.

Capt. T. N. Simeona, the pound master for the Kohala area on the Big Island near the end of the 19th century, was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 30, 1890. His story was told and his name added to the police memorial wall at the Hilo Police Station on Monday during the Hawai‘i Police Department’s National Police Week ceremony.

Of the four finalists for Hawaiʻi County police chief, Benjami Moszkowicz, a 22-year veteran with the rank of major at Honolulu Police Department, was the only person with no law enforcement experience on the Big Island.

The community has gathered at the Hilo police station this morning to celebrate Police Week and honor Hawaiʻi police officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

Tyler Carach, “The Donut Boy,” will be visiting the Hilo Police Station with his family between 10:00 a.m. and noon to give out free donuts to officers. 

A 63-year-old Hilo man died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, after being in police custody.

The Hawaiʻi Island Police Department celebrated National Police Week on Monday, May 14, at an opening ceremony held at the Hilo police station.

Police Week is a nationally recognized week of activities in support of police work and in recognition of officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
