Residents should remain vigilant, seek assistance if needed following fallout from Episode 41 of Kīlauea eruption
Hawai‘i County Civil Defense advises the public that tephra can pose a health hazard and irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory system; tephra was reported to have fallen Jan. 24 in communities including Volcano Village, Mauna Loa Estates, ʻŌhiʻa Estates, Mountain View, Fern Acres, Kurtistown, ʻĀinaloa, Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiian Beaches and Pāhoa.
Strong winds persist in driest areas of Big Island, continuing elevated wildfire danger
National Weather Service extended a wind advisory in effect for North Kohala and portions of South Kohala, North Kona, Hāmākua, Kaʻū and Puna, adding the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, as ridge of high pressure to north of state will keep same locations parched and primed for fires under the right conditions, despite National Weather Service not expected to issue any watches or warnings.
Update: High surf warning canceled, replaced with high surf advisory for Big Island’s western shorelines
Extra-large swell that’s been slamming into the state continues to persist but will drop throughout the night. However, surf of 7 to 10 feet is still expected along the west coastlines of North and South Kohala and North and South Kona.
