#Big Island traffic fatalities

Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Traffic Services Section shows there have been 147 major traffic crashes so far this year, a 31 percent increase from the same time frame last year.

Traffic investigators are awaiting toxicology results for both incidents to determine if alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the crashes.

Mayor Harry Kim will issue a proclamation on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, to announce the formation of a Vision Zero Task Force aimed at eliminating traffic deaths.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation reported that 79 people have been killed in traffic-related fatalities statewide so far in 2018.
