State and federal transportation officials will update the public on the proposed Puainako Street widening project at a meeting scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Waiakea Intermediate School cafeteria.

The community is invited to view the project displays beginning at 5:15 p.m., with the actual presentation starting at 6 p.m. An opportunity for public comments will follow.

The project involves the partial realignment and widening of Puainako Street from the east side of the Kilauea Avenue intersection to Komohana Street.

The portion along the front of the Waiākea Schools complex to the east side of Kīlauea Avenue will be a widening of the existing Puainako Street from two to four lanes.

The segment from the vicinity west of the Waiakea Schools complex to Komohana Street will consist of construction of a new four-lane roadway along a new alignment.

Project officials said improvements within the project’s 1.5-mile-long corridor will include sidewalks and bicycle lanes, drainage structures, traffic signals, retaining walls, sound walls, raised and at-grade medians and landscaping.

To construct this project, property beyond the existing Department of Transportation right-of-way will need to be acquired, officials said.

Those needing language translation or an auxiliary aid service (e.g., sign language interpreter, accessible parking or materials in alternative format) are asked to contact Robert Sun at (808) 692-7578 seven days prior to the meeting. TTY users may use TRS to contact the DOT office.
