Public Reminded of Firearm Registration Guidelines
The Hawaii Police Department is reminding those planning to register firearms of legal and safety procedures.
Before going to the police station, the firearm should be prepared by having it visually safe. That includes removing the bolt and/or clip and sliding the weapon into the open position.
By state law, the firearm must also be transported in an enclosed container.
It is also against the law to transport a loaded firearm.
A police spokesman said that registration will not occur if the firearm is not “open” and visually safe for inspection. The applicant may be asked to leave with the firearm and return during the next working day or next available appointment.
The police station must not be entered with any kind of ammunition in possession. Bringing a loaded firearm or a firearm and ammunition into a police station is grounds for arrest.
Those unsure about the procedures should secure the firearm and ask for assistance, the spokesman said.
