O-bon Begins
Strong ancestral ties, respect and honor for loved ones past, and gratitude in the form of music and dance begins June 8, at the Keauhou Shopping Center.
From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Bon-Odori, or bon dancing will take place with the chest thumping rhythms of the Kona Hongwanji Taiko Group.
The lower parking lot of the shopping center will be transformed into the host site of this cultural event. This Buddhist tradition is celebrated in Japan and emigrated to Hawai’i with our many Japanese immigrants.
Here in Hawai’i generations of Japanese-Americans have grown and prospered, yet the sacrifices of ancestors remain in memory and are especially reflected upon and appreciated during Bon season.
Admission is free, as are Bon Dance towels while supplies last. Refreshments and yummy snacks and food will be available for purchase.
The Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple is presenting this event. For more information call 323-2993.
