An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck the Mariana Islands today, but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Oahu said based on data collected it did not appear that a large tsunami had been generated.
The US Geological Survey said the tremor struck at 2:32 p.m. Hawaii time, or 10:32 a.m. Tuesday, local time.
Its epicenter was 26 miles west of Agrihan in the Northern Mariana Islands. It occurred at a depth of 375 miles, which the warning center was too deep to create a tsunami threat.
The Marianas are made up of an archipelago of volcanic summits located east of the Philippines and north of Guam.
The islands are located about 3,800 miles west of Hawaii.
