Mother’s Day Weekend: Music and Flowers Galore
Sons, daughters and husbands take note: Mother’s Day is fast approaching!
Whether or not you’re treating mom to brunch, dinner or a buffet on Sunday, don’t let your appreciation end with dessert. It’s a weekend overflowing with music and flowers, and there’s something for every mother to love.
Friday and Saturday in Kona, the Kona Orchid Society will present its annual show at the Old Airport Maka`eo Pavilion featuring plants, crafts and lessons on orchid culture. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
On Saturday at 11 a.m., the Volcano Arts Center presents its Mother’s Day fundraising event, “Arts in Bloom.”
Enjoy pupus, mimosas, champagne, orchids and native plants for sale in addition to live music, giveaways and more.
Saturday afternoon in Hilo, Kamehameha Schools presents its Senior Concert Recital from 4 to 6 p.m. at the First United Protestant Church, while the Palace Theater presents Makana live in concert at 7 p.m.
On Sunday afternoon, return to the Palace Theater at 3 p.m. for a Mother’s Day performance by the Hilo Community Chorus celebrating the American Spirit. The chorus will perform Randall Thompson’s “Testament of Freedom,” followed by Aaron Copland’s “Old American Songs.”
The chorus will also be performing a collection of “American Spirituals,” which are hopeful songs dating back to the days of slavery in America, when men and women in bondage would sing and dance in secret to raise their spirits.
