New Guinea Hit by Fifth Strong Quake in Six Weeks

Another week, another strong tremor in the earthquake-prone region of New Guinea.
Today’s 6.5-magnitude temblor struck in the New Ireland area of Latangia in the eastern portion of Papua New Guinea. It occurred at 1:14 p.m. Hawaii time, or 9:14 a.m. Wednesday local time.
It was the fifth strong earthquake to strike the region in the past six weeks.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Ewa Beach, Oahu, no wide-ranging tsunami was generated.
