Governor Releases $7.5M for Lanakila Homes Renovations
Gov. Neil Abercrombie has released $7.5 million for improvements to the Lanakila Homes housing project in Hilo.
The 50-year-old public housing complex has been vacant for more than a decade. The renovations and rebuilding will allow for units to be rented to qualifying families.
“Appropriating the proper funds and financial support for Lanakila Homes has always been one of my top priorities,” Hilo Sen. Gil Kahele said in a statement. “I am glad that the governor has released CIP funds specifically to address and improve the critical conditions at Lanakila Homes and finally assist those in need with decent and affordable housing.”
The governor last year released $750,000 for design of 62 units in Lanakila to replace structures built in 1962.
Abercrombie has also issued $2.2 million for improvements to Kohala Hospital and $1.2 million for upgrades to Ke Kumu Ekolu, an affordable housing complex in Waikoloa.
