Meth Conviction Could Result in Life in Prison
A 42-year-old Kona man is facing a sentence of 10 years to life in prison after being convicted today of drug charges by a federal jury in Honolulu.
Federal prosecutors said Uiki Teaupa was found guilty of two drug conspiracy and distribution offenses involving more than 50 grams of methamphetamine.
Florence Nakakuni, US attorney for the District of Hawaii, said information produced during Teaupa’s three-day trial showed that he made at least eight trips to the mainland during which he obtained more than 20 pounds of meth which he brought to the Big Island.
The trips occurred between 2009 and 2012, Nakakuni said.
The indictment was the result of a two-year investigation by the FBI and Hawaii Police Department.
Teaupa is scheduled to be sentenced July 8 before US District Judge J. Michael Seabright.
