Second Body Found Identified as Gilman’s

Police said a body found last week through an anonymous tip has been identified as Dante Peter Gilman, a Hawaiian Acres man missing since Dec. 30.

Gilman’s body was found Tuesday, Jan. 22, off “Tree Planting Road,” an unpaved road off Stainback Highway. Police found the body with the help of a cadaver dog after receiving the tip at 5:18 that morning.

Police said the badly decomposed remains were identified through dental records.

They are not yet releasing the cause of death pending additional forensic analyses. Police are being assisted by an anthropologist from the Joint POW Accounting Command/Central Identification Laboratory from the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Oahu.

Police have charged two cousins from Kurtistown with murder in connection with Gilman’s death. Court documents say that a video surveillance system at Gilman’s home recorded the slaying.

A preliminary hearing for the two, 30-year-old Claude Krause and 19-year-old Kawena Krause, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hilo District Court.

Gilman’s was the second body found off the rural Puna roadway over a five-day period.

The first, which was found on Jan. 18, turned out to be the remains of Shayne Kobayashi, a 38-year-old Pahoa man missing since Dec. 11.
