This Weekend: Geek Out or Fork It

Geek Out

Reinvent yourself and that possible self-perception of being the not so bright bulb of the bunch. Be the geek-cool guy or gal come Monday after a day of science and space exploration at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo’s Science Day.

Saturday January 26, marks the 13th anniversary of the Astronaut Onizuka Science Day and the 28th Anniversary of Ellison Onizuka’s first foray into space. The day begins at 8 a.m., and is free to the public.

Makin’ A

If you’d like to make a fool of yourself on accidental purpose, take part in an improv session at the Aloha Theatre on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The comedy improv group the Alohahas welcome all who want to play through games and scenes in a non-judgmental environment.

Fork It

Food. Wonderful food. On Saturday at the King’s Shops in Waikoloa, the top chefs from the Kohala Coast, as well as culinary students from the Hawai’i Community College in West Hawai’i, offer delectable edibles from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Tickets are $30 per person and are available online at www.konakohalachefs.org. An extra $20 scores you a seat at Food Network Star/Contenstant, Chef Ippy Aiona’s food demo.

Free Jams

Entertainment is free at the monthly jam session at the Keauhou Shopping Center on Saturday January 26. Nathan Aweau, formerly of HAPA and fresh from Washington D.C. for the Hawaiian Inauguration Celebration, will perform at the shopping center from 6 p.m.

A donation of two canned goods for the Hawai’i Food Basket buys your way into an evening of beautiful melody. Get there a little early to enjoy E Ola Hawai’i at 5:30 p.m.

Where Grass is Blue

Do you like a little folk? Lament the lack of the old school singer/songwriter musicianship? On Saturday night at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum will entertain with vocals while they play on fiddle, guitar, mandolin and mandola.

This benefit for the Arc of Kona begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For more information visit www.arcofkona.com.

Not So Lazy Sunday

Do you have a friend, or maybe you are that irrita…awesome person who is up with the roosters and people jokingly, alright, half-jokingly accuse of taking uppers?

Well this Sunday, learn more of the Volcanoes National Park with your enthusiastic self, or friend, and lunch with a park ranger.
