The area of Japan devastated by the March 11 earthquake experienced another strong tremor last night (early Friday evening, Japan time), but the 7.3-magnitude quake apparently caused little damage.

The tremor off the east coast of Honshu Island resulted in a local tsunami a little more than 3 feet in height. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Oahu, it did not generate a wave big enough to have an impact outside of Japan.

The British newspaper The Guardian reported that the temblor caused buildings in Tokyo to sway and prompted residents of coastal towns to flee to higher ground. Only minor injuries were reported.

The newspaper said that according to the the plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power, no damage or leaks occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility that was devastated by the March 11 tsunami.
