Motorcycle Rider Becomes 30th Traffic Fatality of 2012
A 76-year-old Oahu man died Friday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash two days earlier in North Kohala.
Calvin B.T. Hoo of Kapolei was traveling north on Route 250, also known as the Kohala Mountain Road, shortly after noon last Wednesday when he lost control of the motorcycle near the 18-mile marker and ran off the right side of the roadway.
Hoo was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea and later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He was pronounced dead there at 3:29 p.m. Friday.
Police said it is not known if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. An autopsy will be performed.
The death was the 30th on Big Island public roadways this year, twice as many as at this time in 2011.
Acting Sgt. Andres M. Fojas of the Traffic Enforcement Unit said nine of those fatalities involved motorcycle riders.
