Sometimes the working weekend is unavoidable. However, with some of the options below, you can avoid spending all your time in work mode to make a date with fun.

Hilo Orchid Society Show and Sale

Beginning today and running through Sunday, the 60th Annual Hilo Orchid Society Show and Sale will display and sell gorgeous orchids at the Edith Kanaka`ole Tennis Stadium.

Today the show and sale runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Saturday, the sale starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. The final day’s activities start at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.

The Edith Kanaka’ole Tennis Stadium is located at 350 Kalaniakoa St. in Hilo.

Kukui Dye Workshop

On Saturday, learn to make traditional kukui dye using the kukui nut’s rind, bark and roots at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook.

The day begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Tuition is $45 general, $30 for kama’aina, or locals, and $25 for Bishop Museum or Amy Greenwell Garden members.

Bernice Akamine will instruct participants in creating the dyes, as well as the cultural significance the kukui tree has in Native Hawaiian culture.

Do You Scuba?

On Sunday at 9 a.m., the women from Sun and Sea Hawai`i will host a dive at Leleiwi Beach Park near Richardson’s Ocean Center.

This is for certified scuba divers only. Reserve a scuba tank and gear at Sun and Sea Hawai`i for pickup by 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Meet under the gazebo and bring some dishes to share and enjoy at the burger barbeque following the dive. Bring your own beverage and blanket or chair.

Leleiwi Beach Park/Wailena Park is located at 2279 Kalanianaole St. in Hilo.
