It is a rare weekend of rather diverse options in activity and fun on our Big Island.  Here is a little list of potential plans.

Some Enchanted Evening

It’s another Friday night, but this particular night features a musical theater cabaret featuring young artists from the Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival. Tickets are $15; the show takes place at the Fairmont Orchid and begins at 7:30 p.m.

Pre-dinner show will be at Brown’s Beach House at the Fairmont Orchid. Call 887-7704 for dinner reservations. The Fairmont Orchid is located at 1 North Kaniku Drive on the Kohala Coast.

Queendom: It’s a Drag

On Friday night, approximately 10 queens will participate in a drag pageant on My Bar’s stage from 9 p.m. The cover is $3 and doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Then on Saturday night ,the Queens return to the stage and kick off a dance party that will last until the wee hours.

Cover is $3 and dancing ends at 2 a.m. Doors open at 8 p.m. My Bar is located at 74-5606 Luhia Street in Kailua-Kona.

Obon Dance

At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night, the Honoka`a Hongwanji Mission hosts its annual celebration of departed loved ones and ancestors. The Bon Dance is free. There will be snacks and traditional live music.

Bon dance is a structured, stylized dance form. Expect to see colorful yukata or light kimonos. The Honoka`a Hongwanji Mission is located at 45-516 Lehua Street in Honoka`a.

Pride Day Proclamation

Big Island Pride

Have a play date with the LGBT community on Sunday. This free LGBT pride event held at the King Kamehameha Hotel is open to friends, family and loved ones.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., enjoy water sports, cash bar, comedy and dancing on the beach.

30th Annual Orchid Show and Sale

In Honalu on Sunday, covet, peruse and perhaps purchase gorgeous orchids at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall located on Highway 11 at mile marker 114. There will be displays of live blooming cattleya, cymbidium, dendrobium, miltonia, phalaenopsis, vanda and more.

Mingle with veteran orchid enthusiasts and bring your questions and curious mind. Get educated about collecting, cultivating and growing orchids. Event begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.
