UPDATE: Remnants of Daniel May Bring Rain Thursday

Hurricane Daniel has been downgraded to a tropical storm as it continues its movement toward the cooler waters of the central Pacific, the National Hurricane Center said today.

Just before 4 p.m. today, Daniel, which is expected to soon become a tropical depression, was located 1,150 miles east-southeast of Hilo and moving west at 17 mph.

The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to weaken to a remnant low-pressure system on Thursday. At that point it will be located 700 miles east-southeast of Hilo.

The weather service said a large area of enhanced moisture associated with Daniel will bring increased showers to the state Thursday afternoon,  with most of the rainfall focused over windward areas.

The moisture is expected to move to the west Friday night followed by normal trade wind showers through the weekend.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Emilia became the first Category 4 storm in the Pacific this season before losing some punch this afternoon.

Emilia, which this evening was located about 700 miles south-southwest of Baja California, was still packing sustained winds of 110 mph this evening but was expected to drop below hurricane strength by Friday.
