Strong northeast winds are expected to affect northern parts of the Big Island through 6 a.m. Tuesday, prompting a wind advisory.

Officials with the National Weather Service said northeast winds of 15 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, are expected in the affected area.

The strong winds could damage roofs by tearing off shingles, break tree branches, and blow away unsecured tents and awnings. Driving conditions could also become hazardous, particularly for drivers of high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to watch for falling tree branches while walking or driving and to secure or take down tents and awnings.

Officials also advise residents to prepare for possible power outages as the strong winds move through the area.
