High surf advisory now in effect for east, southeast shorelines of Big Island
A high surf advisory is now in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday for east and southeast shorelines of the Big Island as a short-period south swell and strong winds generated by what is now Tropical Storm Nolo is expected to produce advisory level surf along those exposed shores.
Large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet, increasing to 8 to 12 feet, are forecast Friday for the Big Island. Those strong breaking waves as well as strong currents will make swimming and other ocean recreation dangerous.
The public is advised to heed all advice from ocean safety officials, and remember: when in doubt, don’t go out.
Tropical Storm Nolo is forecast to continue strengthening south of the Big Island tonight as it tracks northward. It is then forecast to move westward this weekend, with its center remaining south of the main Hawaiian Islands.
A hurricane watch, tropical storm warning and flood watch also continue to be in effect for the island.
