Tropical Storm Odalys forms in the Pacific, gradually strengthening
Currently well east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, environmental conditions appear conducive for some development of this system by the middle to latter portion of this week.
Newly formed Tropical Storm Odalys, located more than a thousand miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, is gradually strengthening, according to the National Hurricane Center and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
Currently well east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, environmental conditions appear conducive for some development of this system by the middle to latter portion of this week as it moves westward to west-southwestward, according to the National Hurricane Center on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Odalys is currently 1,310 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph moving at 9 mph.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph with higher gusts. Continued gradual strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours, and Odalys is forecast to become a hurricane by Monday.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.
A tropical depression could form south or southeast of the Hawaiian Islands once conditions become more favorable.
The formation chance of a new depression through the next 48 hours remains low at 0%, while formation chance over the next seven days increases to about 60%.
