Hawai’i Island police arrest 17 motorists from Aug. 17-23 on Big Island roadways
Five of the drivers arrested for DUI were involved in traffic crashes; one was younger than 21 years old. Police report DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
Hawai‘i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant throughout the week of Aug. 17-23.
Five of the arrested drivers were involved in traffic crashes; one was younger than 21 year’s old.
Police arrested a total of 504 people for DUI so far this year, a 13.7% decrease compared with 584 by this time in 2025.
Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and found a total of 637 major crashes so far in 2026, or a 5.63% decrease from last years’ total of 675.
Traffic Services also reports there have been 20 fatal crashes resulting in 22 fatalities as of Aug. 23, an increase of nearly 43% from last year’s 14 fatal crashes and an increase of nearly 47% by the same time in 2025.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
