8 motorists arrested week of Aug. 10-16 for DUI on Big Island roadways
Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; 2 were younger than 21 years old; police so far this year have made 487 DUI arrests, a 15.3% decrease compared with 575 during the same period last year.
Big Island police continued their crackdown on motorists who choose to drive under the influence of an intoxicant on the island’s roadways, arresting 8 for DUI during the week of Aug. 10-16.
Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; 2 were younger than 21 years old.
Police so far this year have made 487 DUI arrests, a 15.3% decrease compared with 575 during the same period last year.
Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and discovered 619 major crashes so far this year on Big Island roadways, a decrease of 5.5% compared with 655 major crashes during the same time in 2025.
There have been 20 fatal crashes and 22 fatalities since Aug. 16 on the island, representing increases of 42.86% for fatal crashes and 46.67% for fatalities when compared with the 14 fatal crashes and 15 fatalities by the same date last year.
Hawai‘i Police Department advises that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
