Second screening of Hakalau documentary to accompany meeting about Hakalau bridge signs

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation announces a second public screening of the documentary “Hakalau — Bridges Across Time,” which will accompany a discussion about the Hakalau Stream Bridge interpretive signs.

The rescheduled screening and discussion are scheduled for Aug. 29 at Hakalau Jodo Mission, located at 29-2271 Old Māmalahoa Highway.

On the agenda

• 4 p.m.: Doors open
• 5 p.m.: Documentary screening
• 5:30 p.m.: Discussion and question-and-answer session about the documentary and bridge interpretive signs (which will explain the historical features of the bridge)
• 6 p.m.: Wrap-up and final opportunity to comment on signs
• 6:30 p.m.: Conclusion of meeting

The 30-minute documentary details plantation history of Hakalau and the Hakalau and Hāmākua Coast bridges. It was commissioned by the state Transportation Department, which is now performing lead remediation on the Hakalau Stream Bridge.

Lead remediation work is scheduled to be completed at the end of the year.

The bridge was originally built in 1911 and later reconstructed in 1953. The lead remediation projet will be followed by rehabilitation of the bridge, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2030.

“Hakalau — Bridges Across Time” was produced and directed by local filmmaker Nāʻālehu Anthony of ʻŌiwi TV.

The documentary was previously screened in May for participants in Hilo.
